City Winery Philadelphia Presents: Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey live on March 17th at 7:30pm

Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey grew up together in Winston-Salem, NC, started playing music together in middle school—and have really never stopped. Through countless bands along the way—including, most famously, the dB’s, but also Little Diesel, Sneakers, Continental Drifters, the Golden Palominos, the Salt Collective, and the Paranoid Style—the two lauded songwriters have maintained a deep musical connection.

Their acclaimed albums of “duo” material—Mavericks (1991) and hERE & nOW (2009)—reveal their fondness for the acoustic stylings of the Everly Bros. and the Lovin’ Spoonful. And these disks are fan favorites, as is Our Back Pages, a lively 2020 collection of acoustic reinventions of dB’s songs. Both artists are in the process of recording new electric solo albums this year, as well, so expect to hear material from across the full spectrum of their classic songwriting, past present and future. Don’t miss this rare chance to see Peter & Chris together on stage again.

Mavericks, reviewed in Entertainment Weekly, 1991 (Ira Robbins): [T]he dB’s—led by singing guitarists Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey—helped build the stage for Southern jangle-pop, the tuneful back-to-American-roots movement from which R.E.M. emerged. [Here] the pair uses more acoustic instrumentation than before and shows a mature, deepened commitment to the simple musical values of striking melodies and intimate, heartfelt lyrics. Holsapple songs like the gently parental ”Child in You” and the loving ”I Know You Will” express tender feeling, while Stamey’s ”Haven’t Got the Right (to Treat Me Wrong)” and the electrified ”I Want to Break Your Heart” confront the rocky side of romance. . . . Mavericks resonates with emotional power. Rating: A
